In Devandras Defence…

In the last few weeks the longstanding tirade of unfortunate incidents involving women has yet again raised its ugly head and landed Coronation Street hunk Devandra (Dev) Allahan in a bit of bother.

Not so long ago, Dev kindly invited Mary along, as a friend, to a night at a delightful country retreat.

He had intended to take his partner Erica long (if you lucky enough to be Devs partner, these are the sort of romantic and extravagant gifts you can expect) but when she couldn’t go,  Dev offered Mary the chance to take her place.

The day didn’t get off to the best of starts when Dev was subject to a prolonged and unnecessarily painful wax when trying to enjoy the excellent range of spa treatments on offer at the hotel. Clearly in some discomfort and experiencing a lot of trauma from this, he took refuge in the comfort of his hotel room. Draped in a  complimentary gown and relaxing on the bed, Dev innocently accepted Marys perhaps inappropriate offer of a drink from the mini bar. This is where it all started to go wrong.

Rightly or wrongly, we all know Dev enjoys nothing more than a great single malt and the participation in some intelligent conversation with the female of the species.

On this occasion however, it was completely unaware of how the events would unfold. One drink lead to another and before he knew it, he blanked out on his hotel bed.

When he awoke, he could not believe his eyes. Mary, laying beside him, under the same cover. Surely this could not be happening, how many did he have?

A panic struck Dev leaped from his bed with the ferocity of a threatened bear and proceeded to try make sense of what had just happened.

He wakes Mary and begins to question her. What’s her motive?

Mary seems very pleased with herself, which to be fair, why wouldn’t you be? This is Dev. She gives no thought about Erica her friend, or how this could affect Devs relationship.

Perhaps she was unable to properly focus after experiencing what undoubtedly be the most satisfying and unforgettable hour and forty five minutes of her life just a few hours before. Never the less, this is a big betrayal of the trust both Erica and Dev had placed in her the night before.

But this shouldn’t surprise us. If you have watched Coronation Street long enough, you will be all too aware that this is a theme that has run though Devs life on the street. A long line of predators who try to trap Dev and have him for themselves, regardless of whether or not he is in a relationship. Cursed with Hollywood looks and a voice that could soothe the sorest throat, Dev is constantly at the mercy of these women.

Remember this?

This was a vile stunt during one of the many campaigns against Dev by a scorned woman through no fault of his own.

What we need to remember about Dev is that he respects women. He also has a very hectic lifestyle. A doting father of two and highly successful business portfolio, he simply needs the occasional time to allow himself to unwind, sometimes this involves a little bit of female company under the most innocent intentions.

Running his business empire from his head office on Coronation street, he cannot avoid encounting a large number of women who simply want to take advantage. While he can normally keep them abit bay, it stands to reason that every now again, he simply will have to fall at their mercy.

We can only hope that Dev does not allow the actions of Mary at the retreat to cause problems in his relationship with Erica. Lord knows he has already been unlucky in love on too many occasions.

For now, we will just have to wait and see.
